Digital Infrastructure & Data

The connective tissue of the smart city.

34knowledge40orgs22projects11events3subtopics

Every other smart-city domain runs on the same digital substrate: networks that move data, platforms that store and model it, and standards that let one city's tools work in another. The EU's Living-in.eu declaration (signed by hundreds of European cities), the Digital Europe Programme, Horizon Europe's Cluster 4, and the MIMs (Minimal Interoperability Mechanisms) framework all shape this layer.

Three leaves sit under this cluster: connectivity, IoT and sensor networks (the physical layer, including cybersecurity); data platforms, AI and digital twins (the modelling layer); and open data, standards and interoperability (the integration and policy layer). FIWARE, OASC, GAIA-X, the Smart Data Models initiative and ETSI cityverse work define the de-facto European stack.

The leaves below are deliberately about infrastructure — domain-specific AI (AI for traffic, AI for energy) lives in the cluster it serves rather than here. Useful for CIOs, CTOs, urban-platform teams, IoT/connectivity engineers and data architects in municipalities and the ecosystem around them.
