CityNexus is an urban-planning application developed for the Destination Earth (DestinE) Platform, initially to support the Local Council of Amager Vest in Copenhagen. It addresses concerns in Ørestad, a fast-growing district where planners are weighing how to manage traffic congestion, air quality and the quality of urban life. The project’s aim is to help local decision-makers compare development options before putting them into practice.2510
Developed by Solenix Engineering GmbH and MindEarth, CityNexus combines mobility records and local information with Earth-observation and environmental datasets. These include Sentinel-5P TROPOMI observations, ECMWF’s ERA5 weather data and the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model. The application uses these inputs to examine mobility patterns, air quality, population distribution, public health and access to services.31011
Its central feature is interactive “what-if” modelling: users can explore how interventions such as road redesign, low-emission vehicles or changes to speed limits might affect urban indicators. The tool is intended to make trade-offs visible and support evidence-based planning, rather than prescribe a single solution.35
The original use case was shaped around Copenhagen and Amager Vest’s planning needs. CityNexus was later made available on the DestinE Platform; a 2025 update described it as being in beta testing, with demonstration environments for Copenhagen, Bologna, Seville and Aarhus.2 The sources identify the developers and local end-user, but do not specify a project founding date or name a single project lead.
