Project Overview
Berlin TXL is a new urban district being built on the former Tegel Airport site in Berlin, after the airport's closure. The text says the state-owned company Berlin TXL Management GmbH is developing it from the ground up as a model district for sustainable urban innovation. In 2021 the green light was given for the project, which the text describes as one of the largest and most ambitious urban development projects in Europe. The neighbourhood sits just 15 minutes from Berlin city centre.
Urban Tech Republic
The Urban Tech Republic is described as an innovation campus where science, research and industry work together. According to the text, future urban technologies will be researched, developed, produced, tested and exported here. The Berliner Hochschule für Technik will move into Terminal A with 2,500 students. Space for up to 1,000 companies is being created in the commercial area and industrial park, providing 20,000 jobs.
Schumacher Quartier
The Schumacher Quartier covers around 46 hectares, with more than 5,000 flats for over 10,000 people planned. The text lists nurseries, schools, commercial premises and extensive green spaces. Planned measures include:
- Buildings using hybrid timber construction
- A rainwater management system based on the 'sponge city' principle
- A low-exergy network for heat supply
- A low-car mobility concept with mobility hubs, car-sharing and bike-sharing
- Measures to promote biodiversity Affordable housing here will be developed exclusively by organisations dedicated to the public good, and 35–40 per cent of future rents will be subsidised.
Tegeler Stadtheide
Grün Berlin GmbH, a state-owned company, is responsible for the phased redevelopment of the former runway and apron. The text describes a prospective nature and landscape conservation area of 220 hectares, offering leisure activities and research. It is presented as bridging the gap between the city and nature.
Further Housing Areas
Cité Pasteur and TXL Nord together offer the potential for an additional 4,000 homes.
Purpose of Berlin TXL: A City for the People
The project's guiding vision, in the text's words, is a better, liveable and social city, a city for the people that is hyper-modern and innovative. Experts from many disciplines are said to develop holistic solutions together. Visitors can find out more through the Infocenter, guided tours of the former airfield, and FAQs, and the site also advertises current job openings.
