The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is a London-based membership organisation focused on making the built environment more sustainable. Founded in 2007, it brings together more than 700 members from across the construction, property, finance and policy sectors. Its work is centred on the UK’s transition to net zero, with an emphasis on how buildings, communities, cities and infrastructure are planned, financed, designed, constructed, operated and repurposed.
UKGBC’s core role is to help shape the industry’s direction through research, policy engagement and practical guidance. It produces evidence-based resources for the sector, including feasibility studies on the design, delivery and cost of new net zero carbon buildings. One of its better-known contributions is a framework definition for net zero carbon buildings, developed to give the industry a clearer basis for action in both construction and operation.
The organisation also acts as a policy voice for the built environment, aiming to influence regulation and market standards in the UK. While its remit is national, it is connected to a wider global movement through the World Green Building Council, which links green building organisations in many countries.
UKGBC is headquartered at The Building Centre in London. Its profile is that of a sector network rather than a project delivery body: it convenes members, develops standards and supports the shift toward lower-carbon buildings through analysis, advocacy and collaboration.
