UCL Urban Laboratory is a cross-disciplinary centre at University College London for urban research, teaching and public engagement. Established in 2005, it brings together work from across UCL’s faculties to examine social, physical and technological issues affecting cities and the built environment.14 Its activities include collaborative research, education, public events and the communication of research beyond the university.112
The centre’s work spans subjects including housing and displacement, urban inequalities, public space, cultural heritage, sustainability and smart cities. Its approach draws on the arts, humanities and sciences, and includes experimental and creative research methods.12 The Urban Lab department sits within UCL’s Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, alongside the Urban Lab Collective, a wider network of UCL academics working on urban issues.1
Its geographic reach extends beyond London: UCL describes its work as addressing cities across the globe, while its research and public engagement also connect local urban questions with international perspectives.83 A notable example of its public-facing work is the Urban Lab 20 Archive, assembled for the centre’s 20th anniversary in 2025. It contains more than 270 records, including publications, exhibitions, podcasts and research projects, organised around themes such as housing, global urbanisms and creative research methods.6
The current director is Professor Catalina Ortiz, who began her tenure in June 2024.11 The centre’s founder and first director was Matthew Gandy, who led it from 2005 to 2011.5
