The UCL Institute for Health Equity (IHE) is a London-based research and policy institute focused on the social determinants of health and the reduction of health inequalities. It was established by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, whose work on health equity has shaped public debate in the UK and beyond. The institute operates as part of University College London and presents itself as a resource for governments, local authorities, health bodies, and community partners seeking evidence-based ways to improve health outcomes.
IHE’s work is rooted in the idea that health is shaped not only by healthcare, but by living conditions such as income, housing, employment, education, and early years support. Its mission is to translate research into practical action, with a particular emphasis on local implementation. The institute supports “Marmot Places” — local partnerships that use the Marmot framework to address inequalities across public services and community settings.
Its current portfolio shows a strong UK focus, with projects in places including Medway, Northumberland, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Leeds, Camden, and several Welsh local authority areas. IHE also works with national bodies and international partners, including the World Health Organization and Public Health Scotland. Recent work has included reports on inequalities in children’s health, employment and good work, Scotland’s social determinants of health, and the links between health and housing. It has also collaborated with Barnardo’s on the Children and Young People’s Health Equity Collaborative.
IHE’s role is less about service delivery than about evidence, advocacy, and local change. Its reports often combine data analysis, resident feedback, and policy recommendations designed to secure commitment from public stakeholders.
