Social Enterprise NL is the Dutch umbrella organisation for social enterprises. Founded in 2012, it set out to help build a stronger ecosystem for businesses that aim to solve social and environmental problems through their core activity. Its stated ambition is a “radical system improvement,” with a focus on an economy that is circular, inclusive and less unequal.
The organisation is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and works at national level. Its activities centre on supporting social entrepreneurs with practical tools and collective advocacy. According to the organisation, it helps members with funding, impact measurement, and business development, while also offering training sessions, networking events and policy engagement. It presents itself as a learning network for social enterprises and a connector between entrepreneurs, funders and institutions.
Social Enterprise NL has also played a role in increasing the visibility of social enterprise in the Netherlands since its creation. It works to improve the business environment for this sector and to make social entrepreneurship more recognized in public debate and policy. The organisation’s work is not limited to advice and events: it also helps shape the framework in which social enterprises operate.
Its lighthouse role is less about a single flagship project than about ecosystem building. The organisation has helped establish the social enterprise movement in the Netherlands and continues to act as a hub for the sector. In practice, that means combining member support, advocacy and community building around a common goal: making social entrepreneurship a more established part of the Dutch economy.
