Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) is a European platform that brings together grid operators and civil society organisations to shape the expansion of electricity grids for a decarbonised energy system. Based in Brussels, Belgium, the initiative works at the intersection of energy infrastructure, climate policy, biodiversity and public acceptance. Its stated aim is to support fair, transparent and sustainable grid development in line with the Paris Agreement.
RGI presents itself as a collaboration between non-governmental organisations and transmission system operators, or TSOs, from across Europe. Rather than focusing only on technical grid planning, it frames grids as part of a broader “energy transition ecosystem,” where social, environmental and economic interests must be balanced. Its work is organised around three main dimensions: energy system planning and implementation; nature and biodiversity; and public engagement and policy.
The initiative produces studies, databases, event formats and guidance materials for decision-makers and practitioners. Recent work includes a brochure on community and local benefits, a climate hazards dataset for electricity grid adaptation, and a press release on climate-proofing electricity grids in Europe. RGI also hosts the European Grid Conference and runs the Grid Awards, which highlight projects and practices related to fair and inclusive energy transition.
Its geographic scope is European, with members, partners and activities spanning multiple countries. The organisation’s current chief executive officer is Antonella Battaglini. RGI says it supports both onshore and offshore energy systems and seeks to align grid expansion with nature protection and citizen involvement.
