Neon Neue Energieökonomik is a Berlin-based consulting firm focused on the economics and regulation of electricity markets. Founded in 2014 by energy economist Lion Hirth, the company positions itself as a specialist rather than a broad management consultancy: its work centres on quantitative analysis, market design and policy questions tied to the energy transition.
The firm advises ministries, regulators, grid operators, utilities, electricity traders and other market participants in Germany and across Europe. According to its own description, the team combines more than 70 years of combined electricity-market experience. Its services include studies, consulting assignments, and training seminars, with an emphasis on making complex market mechanisms understandable through clear language and concise graphics.
Neon’s projects sit at the intersection of economics and energy policy. The company says it works on the design and evolution of European power markets, including contracts for difference, capacity markets, demand flexibility, local signals, price zones, balancing energy and network connections. It also covers practical market topics such as day-ahead and intraday trading, retail tariffs and grid charges. Some assignments are short-term advisory projects, while others extend over several years.
A notable part of its portfolio is public-sector work. Neon says it has supported the German federal ministry responsible for economic affairs and energy, as well as EU institutions and international organisations. It also runs workshops and executive courses, including regular in-person courses in Berlin.
The company is led by Prof. Dr. Lion Hirth and Dr. Silvana Tiedemann as managing directors, alongside partners Dr. Ingmar Schlecht and Dr. Anselm Eicke.
