Haus der Materialisierung (HdM) is a Berlin-based hub focused on climate-friendly resource use and circular material flows. Located at Otto-Braun-Straße 70–72, in the Haus der Statistik complex near Alexanderplatz, it brings together initiatives and institutions working on sustainable economic practices, reuse, repair and shared use of materials. The project sits within the wider Haus der Statistik model scheme, which has been developed since 2018 by the cooperative alliance known as Koop5.
The HdM operates as a collective structure rather than a single organisation. Its actors work self-organised, as freelancers, or in partially funded groups and business models. Since summer 2021, the centre for climate-friendly resource use has also been based there, led by Kunst-Stoffe Berlin and developed as part of Berlin’s citywide Re-Use strategy. A three-year research project funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) supports the development of the site, under the title “Reallabor Zirkuläres Wirtschaften im urbanen Kontext, Umweltkommunikation im Haus der Materialisierung,” in cooperation with TU Berlin, ZUsammeKUNFT Berlin and Material Mafia.
Its activities are practical and public-facing: workshops in wood, textiles, metal, goldsmithing, upcycling and cycling; repair and lending initiatives; educational programmes; urban gardening; exhibitions; and a zero-waste building and creative materials market. The HdM also hosts repair cafés, food distribution, used-material markets and shared workshops. In this sense, it functions as a local testbed for reuse and circularity, open to residents, schools and community groups.
