Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment is Imperial College London’s dedicated institute for climate and environmental research. Based in South Kensington, London, it brings together expertise from across the university to study climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and to translate research into policy, training and practical applications.
The institute says its mission is to lead on world-class research, policy, training and innovation that support effective action on climate change. Its work is organised across four main areas: research, policy, innovation, and education and training. That broad mandate is reflected in its day-to-day activity, which ranges from producing scientific research and evidence briefings to convening events, supporting fellowships and developing resources for public and policy audiences.
A notable strand of its work is communication and policy engagement. The Grantham Institute publishes reports, briefing papers and evidence submissions, and it also runs resources such as the climate change FAQs, developed jointly with the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science. The institute’s website highlights recent work on attribution science, extreme weather, energy systems, water data and climate pathways, showing a strong focus on connecting science to current policy debates.
The institute is part of Imperial College London and describes itself as sitting “at the heart” of the university’s climate work. Its geographic scope is global, even though its institutional base is in London. Public-facing activities include research fellowships, newsletters, publications and events, alongside links with businesses, industry and policymakers.
The Grantham Institute is widely associated with the Grantham Foundation’s support and was launched in February 2007.
