Gaia-X Hub Germany is the national contact point for Germany’s participation in Gaia-X, the European initiative building a federated and secure data infrastructure. Based in Munich, Germany, the hub serves as an entry point for companies, public bodies and other interested parties that want to understand the project or contribute to it. It presents itself as a place for information, exchange and coordination, with a focus on helping German actors access emerging data-space structures and related technologies.
Gaia-X itself was initiated in 2019 as a Franco-German project and has since grown into a broader European effort. Its goal is to create interconnected data spaces where data can be shared securely through common standards and open interfaces, while data owners keep control over access and use. The model is designed to support interoperability, privacy, transparency and compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Gaia-X Hub Germany translates those principles into a national setting by gathering use cases, domain-specific requirements and practical examples.
The hub’s work is organised in sector-based domains and around concrete Gaia-X projects. It also publishes white papers and position papers, and offers public learning formats such as the Gaia-X Campus, which introduces the basics of the data economy, data spaces and data ecosystems. According to Gaia-X, German implementation is supported by concrete application examples and lighthouse projects, including work on shared use cases in areas such as smart buildings and municipal data spaces.
The portrait of Gaia-X Hub Germany is therefore that of a coordinating platform rather than a technology provider: it connects businesses, public institutions and research actors to shape the rules and applications of sovereign data sharing in Germany and, by extension, across Europe.
