FIWARE Foundation is a Berlin-based non-profit association that supports the FIWARE open-source ecosystem, a set of software platform standards designed to make smart applications easier to build. Founded in 2016, the foundation acts as an independent legal body for the community, with its bylaws describing a mission centred on research in information and communications technology and on the development of an open, sustainable ecosystem around public, royalty-free, implementation-driven standards.
The organisation’s main office is in Berlin, Germany. Its work is international in scope: FIWARE technology is used by developers, end users and public and private stakeholders across cities, industry, energy, agriculture and other sectors. The foundation promotes open standards and open-source implementations intended to improve interoperability and reduce vendor lock-in. Its platform is built around context data management, with the Orion Context Broker identified as a core component.
FIWARE Foundation’s activities include maintaining and validating FIWARE technologies, supporting the community, and helping members and partners adopt common APIs and open-source building blocks. The foundation presents FIWARE as a toolkit for smart solutions, digital twins and data spaces. Its catalogue brings together reusable software components that can be combined with third-party services to speed up development.
A notable strength of FIWARE is its position in smart cities. The foundation describes FIWARE as an open-source initiative defining standards for context data management that support urban applications. Earlier foundation materials noted that the platform had already released dozens of standardized software components for smart applications in cities, industries, e-health and agribusiness.
Key founding actors included Atos, Engineering, Orange and Telefónica. Among the platinum members listed by the foundation are Atos, Engineering, NEC, Red Hat, Telefónica and Trigyn Technologies.
