Dark Matter Labs (DML) is a strategic discovery, design and development lab working on how society responds to technological change and climate breakdown. Its starting point is that today’s interconnected crises reflect deeper problems in the way economic systems are structured. The organisation says it is building practical pathways towards “Life-Ennobling Economies,” including work on currency stewardship, data-informed decision-making and institutions for planetary stewardship.111
Rather than operating as a single project team, DML organises its work through Labs, Arcs and Studios. Labs develop expertise in areas such as governance and capital systems; Arcs set directional goals, including climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030; and the Civic Tech Studio develops tools and knowledge for prototypes across the organisation’s work.1 Its initiatives span civic governance, urban nature, circular-economy law and the built environment. TreesAI, for example, aims to help cities and communities secure funding for urban trees and green spaces, while CircuLaw provides local governments with legal instruments to advance circularity.
DML’s projects are international and place-based. In Daegu, South Korea, it worked with Daegu Technopark, technology businesses and residents on a framework for civic experiments addressing issues including air pollution, street safety and urban water management.6 In Girona, Spain, it is working with the municipality and local stakeholders on proposals for an economy focused on human and planetary well-being.9 Its work on Alternative Camden in London, begun in 2018, explored a civic innovation district using participatory technology and experimentation to address urban issues.8
The organisation operates across multiple geographies and describes its team as distributed globally.211 Its privacy policy lists a registered address in London, and its website identifies legal entities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Sweden.111 The sources reviewed do not establish a founding year or identify a single founder.
