Who Changing Cities Is
Changing Cities e.V. describes itself as the independent movement for a better city. The text says it uses creativity to campaign for sustainable mobility and a better quality of life for all. It supports projects for sustainable mobility and liveable cities in Berlin and across Germany, and states that its earlier Volksentscheid Fahrrad Berlin showed that civil society can shape policy.
The Vision for the City
According to the text, the movement wants a city open to all residents for play, work, sport and creative activities. It wants clean air and a city not clogged with cars, where everyone, including children and seniors, can move safely, quickly and without barriers on foot and by bike.
Mobility Law and Berlin Campaigns
- The text states that Changing Cities initiated the Berlin Mobilitätsgesetz, which SPD, the Greens and the Linke passed together eight years ago.
- It expects the parties in the coalition negotiations to honour the promise of a transport turnaround and a liveable city.
- It reports that the Senatsverkehrsverwaltung promised a sufficiently sized, marked and temporarily secured bike lane on Kantstraße by year-end, before the Verwaltungsgericht Berlin-Brandenburg, while the bike lane was being removed.
Demands on Federal Policy
The text calls on the federal government to stop subsidising combustion-engine traffic and to make public transport (ÖPNV) and cycling more attractive. It criticises the increase in the Deutschlandticket price and refers to the return of the fuel discount (Tankrabatt). A separate item by the Kidical Mass Aktionsbündnis calls on the federal states and municipalities to set up temporary and permanent school streets, citing the examples of Baden-Württemberg, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen and Schleswig-Holstein.
Key Figures: Vision Zero
The page presents Vision Zero, the aim of no seriously injured or killed people in road traffic, as the movement's top goal. It states that on average eight people are killed in road traffic in Germany each day, and that most collisions are avoidable. For Berlin, the text lists 10 pedestrians killed in 2026 compared with 18 in 2025, and 4 cyclists killed compared with 5 in 2025. The national figure of 2113 is marked as an estimate based on 2021 accident figures totalling 2562.
Vigils, Partners and Support
The movement says it supports Fuss e.V. in vigils for pedestrians killed in Berlin and, together with ADFC Berlin e.V., holds vigils for cyclists killed in the city since March 2016, when it first commemorated a driver killed by so-called KuDamm racers. The text also mentions an online shop, and says the organisation is part of the initiative transparente Zivilgesellschaft.
Purpose and Audience: Sustainable Urban Mobility
In its own words, the movement fights for a city where everyone can move safely and without barriers, including children and seniors. It addresses policymakers, stating that it does not wait for hesitant politics but advances its own actions and clear demands. It invites people to join it in putting pressure on better transport policy.
