The Center for Climate IT (CCIT) is a research centre at the IT University of Copenhagen, bringing together researchers from the university’s Computer Science, Digital Design and Business IT departments. Its work examines how digital technologies and digitalisation relate to climate change, sustainability and green transitions. The centre’s stated aim is to contribute interdisciplinary research and take part in public debate on climate IT.28
CCIT was launched at the university on 7 December 2022. At the launch, Head of Center Steffen Dalsgaard and Associate Professor James Maguire presented its vision; Dalsgaard is also listed as the centre’s contact person and responsible lead.511 The centre works with public and private organisations, government, civil society and scholars in Denmark and internationally.13
Its research spans practical questions as well as critical examination of claims about technology and climate action. Projects include DIGIPHYT, which studies whether digital agriculture’s sustainability claims translate into practice; Decoupling IT, an EU-funded comparative ethnography of IT’s role in climate mitigation; and research into Kenyan agri-tech and the tensions between sustainability, development and investment.7 The centre also supports Superblockify, an open-source Python package that helps urban planners identify street-network areas where traffic could be reduced or removed.7
CCIT’s activities extend beyond research projects. It runs monthly seminars featuring scholars from Denmark and elsewhere, and supports RESET, a magazine about the intersections of climate and digital technologies.46 Its work ranges across topics including urban mobility, agriculture, data systems and democratic participation in the green transition.7
