BEE – Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energie is the main umbrella association for Germany’s renewable energy sector. Based in Berlin, it brings together specialist associations, regional organisations, companies and other entities across the full range of renewable energy technologies. According to the association, its remit covers energy generation, grid infrastructure and energy consumption, with a stated goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy in electricity, heat and mobility.
Founded on 14 December 1991, the BEE acts as a central coordination and advocacy platform for the industry. It represents the sector’s interests vis-à-vis federal and regional policymakers, public authorities, the media and wider society. Its work includes preparing policy positions, drafting statements on draft legislation, commissioning studies and organising consultations with political institutions, agencies, research bodies and other associations. The organisation also publishes press releases, position papers, analyses and event information through its website.
The BEE’s geographic scope is national, focused on Germany, where it plays a visible role in debates over the energy transition, heating policy, grid regulation and renewable electricity expansion. Its membership base is broad: publicly available sources describe a network of dozens of member associations and more than 30,000 individual and corporate members, making it one of the most important industry groupings in the German energy landscape.
Recent topics on the BEE website include the federal building modernisation law, the heat planning law, and electricity security legislation, showing how closely the organisation follows the regulatory agenda around decarbonisation. The association is headquartered on the EUREF-Campus in Berlin.
