The Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) is the UK membership body for Directors of Public Health, bringing together the senior public health leaders who advise local authorities on the health of their populations. It presents the collective professional view of those directors and acts as a policy voice on issues ranging from prevention and health inequalities to local public health governance.
ADPH’s work is national in scope, but its day-to-day focus is rooted in local public health practice across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland through its networks and member support structures. The organisation says it works to improve and protect population health by collating the views of Directors of Public Health, advising on public health policy and legislation, and supporting professional development. It also provides practical tools for members, including a weekly consultation scan, position statements, and a manifesto setting out long-term priorities for a healthier nation.
A notable part of ADPH’s activity is its role in convening and amplifying public health expertise. It coordinates constituency networks and supports collaboration between Directors of Public Health and their teams across the UK. Its public-facing work often centres on national consultations and policy debates, including smoking and vaping restrictions, salt reduction, and wider prevention measures. The organisation also highlights annual public health reporting through its Annual Report Celebration, which in 2026 received a record 72 submissions from Directors of Public Health and their teams.
ADPH is led publicly by President Greg Fell OBE, and its website lists Darrell Gale among its healthy places leads. The organisation is registered as a charity and is based in London.
