Ashden is a London-based climate charity that supports practical responses to climate change in the UK and in developing countries. Founded in 2001, it has built its work around identifying, promoting and backing climate solutions that can be scaled through public policy, local delivery and partnerships. Its current messaging focuses on “climate solutions in action” and on accelerating system change, with an emphasis on outcomes that are fairer and more accessible to communities.
The organisation’s main activities fall into three broad areas. First, it runs the Ashden Awards, which have for 25 years highlighted climate innovators from the UK and the Global South. The awards recognise enterprises and organisations working on clean energy, nature-rich communities, green jobs and energy innovation, and offer winners visibility, networking and cash prizes. Second, Ashden works with UK local authorities through advice, resources and case studies to help councils deliver climate action, including energy-efficient homes and greener public spaces. Third, it runs campaigns and learning networks, such as Let’s Go Zero, the national campaign for schools, colleges and nurseries to become zero carbon by 2030.
Ashden’s scope is both national and international. In the UK, it works with councils, schools and community groups; internationally, it uses its awards and networks to support climate pioneers in the Global South as well as in Europe. The charity says its approach combines storytelling, grant-making and practical support to strengthen climate initiatives and help them reach wider audiences.
Ashden is headquartered in London, and its strategy for 2025–30 points to continued work on climate solutions, local delivery and system change.
