New York City’s Internet of Things (IoT) Strategy and Guidelines is the city government’s framework for managing the spread of connected devices across public services and urban infrastructure. Published by the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation, the strategy sets out how the city wants to use IoT to improve government operations, strengthen public services, and support economic development.
The document is not a single pilot project but a citywide policy guide. It outlines where IoT can be used, including air-quality monitoring, traffic analysis, building energy use, waste collection, and public Wi‑Fi expansion. At the same time, it frames IoT as a governance issue: the city stresses privacy, transparency, security, safety, fairness, equity, efficiency, sustainability, and public engagement as core principles.
A central part of the strategy is ecosystem building. New York City says it wants to connect public agencies with universities, startups, investors, and other research partners to support innovation and local industry growth. The strategy also points to workforce development, including efforts to understand local IoT job needs and identify ways to include IoT skills in city training programs.
The document reflects the approach of the Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer, which led the strategy work. While the strategy itself does not report a final project outcome in the usual sense, it has established a framework for responsible IoT deployment in city government and has been cited as an example of how a large city can define principles for a “healthy” IoT ecosystem.
