HySPARK is a five-year EU-funded project to build and test a hydrogen supply and transport system centred on Warsaw and the Mazovian region. Its stated aim is to support cleaner public transport and airport operations, while developing an approach that could be replicated in Italy and Ireland.111
The project runs from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2029 and is coordinated by the Institute of Power Engineering – National Research Institute. ORLEN leads the business work and will supply hydrogen from its hub in Włocławek; the project website says the hub is planned to produce more than 2,500 tonnes of automotive-quality hydrogen a year.1511 The project’s demonstrations are focused on Warsaw Chopin Airport and nearby transport networks, with hydrogen-powered buses, trucks and ground-handling vehicles among the planned applications.3811
The work extends beyond vehicles. The project plans six testbeds, including hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure, mobility applications and green ammonia production. These are intended to be equipped and operated so partners can assess the practical performance of hydrogen systems and coordinate their logistics; a versatile energy planner is also planned to optimise supply chains.18 The project’s broader consortium includes research organisations, companies, public bodies and airport partners. The Institute of Power Engineering – National Research Institute leads administrative and research coordination, with research contributions from Warsaw University of Technology, RINA and Bureau Veritas Polska.5
The project is supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members, with nearly €9 million in EU funding reported by ORLEN.15 The available sources describe planned demonstrations and targets; they do not yet report operational results from the testbeds.8
