NYC DOT’s project page describes an expansion of public curbside Level 2 electric-vehicle charging across New York City. The expansion builds on an earlier curbside demonstration developed by the city with Con Edison and charging provider FLO. 311
The initial program began installing chargers in June 2021 and placed public ports in neighborhoods across all five boroughs; the pilot also included separate ports for city fleet vehicles. 91012 Its evaluation found that charging sessions more than doubled between January 2021 and December 2022 as new chargers came online, while the public chargers were in operation 99.9% of the time during that period. 11 A later progress report said the demonstration exceeded its utilization target and recorded more than 99% uptime over the project’s duration. 5
The expansion is intended to widen access to public charging on city streets. NYC DOT’s announcement describes plans for 600 additional curbside charging points over three years, with locations selected using residential density, limited off-street parking, and concentrations of for-hire vehicle drivers, alongside driver feedback. 2 The announcement identifies neighborhoods in all five boroughs as starting areas for the rollout. 2 The city has also linked charging expansion to its goal of transitioning for-hire vehicle rides to electric or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030. 6
