TransitMatters is a Boston-based nonprofit advocacy group focused on improving public transportation in and around the city. It works to make transit faster, more frequent, reliable and effective, and to give riders, journalists and public officials clearer information for discussing the MBTA’s performance and future. Its work is rooted in Greater Boston, with advocacy that also addresses transit across Massachusetts and New England.412
The organisation was incorporated in 2014, and a 2021 account describes it as established in 2015. Its co-founders include Josh Fairchild, Jeremy Mendelson and Marc Ebuña.412 Fairchild is listed as a co-founder on TransitMatters’ site; the organisation’s current board president is Tim Lawrence, and Chris Friend is interim executive director.51011
TransitMatters’ campaigns include Regional Rail, NextGen Bus, NightBus, Fair Fares, mobility hubs and the Red-Blue Connector. Its Regional Rail work argues for commuter rail that operates more like an urban transit network, with frequent, all-day service. A 2018 report set out that vision; in 2019, the MBTA’s oversight board approved beginning a shift toward a Regional Rail operating model, including more frequent service in Boston and nearby suburbs.4 The group also works on bus-network changes and publishes analysis intended to inform public debate and advocacy.12
Its listed headquarters is at 62 Summer Street, Boston, Massachusetts. The organisation’s current leadership reflects a recent transition: Caitlin Allen-Connelly stepped down at the end of September 2026, and longtime board member Chris Friend was named interim executive director.10
