Transit Tech Lab is a New York-based public-private initiative that connects technology companies with transit agencies to test solutions to operational and infrastructure challenges. Founded in 2018 by the Partnership Fund for New York City and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), it was created to help public agencies apply new technology to transit problems. The Lab is part of the broader Transit Innovation Partnership, launched by the MTA and the Partnership for New York City in 2018.23
The program began with the MTA and expanded in 2019 to include the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and New York City Department of Transportation. Its agency partners have since included NJ TRANSIT and the New York City Department of Design and Construction.34 The Lab runs challenge cycles in which selected early- and growth-stage companies work with agencies on defined needs, then test their proposals in proof-of-concept projects. Recent challenge areas have included infrastructure inspection and maintenance, ridership, and the data and workflows agencies use to manage operations.3511
The projects are practical trials rather than stand-alone demonstrations. In one recent cycle, 17 companies tested technologies with the MTA and Port Authority over eight weeks, addressing infrastructure and data challenges, including work involving PATH commuter rail.3 Earlier graduates include Remix, a platform used to redesign bus routes; Axon Vibe, whose app helped essential workers plan trips during overnight subway disinfection closures; and NaviLens, whose apps support navigation for visually impaired and limited-English-proficiency riders.10
The Lab’s work is centered on the New York metropolitan region, while its stated purpose is to serve large transit agencies in North America.23
