Modeshift builds fare-collection and passenger-information systems for public transport agencies. Founded in 2017, it began as a startup in Eastern Europe and is now headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. Its stated mission is to provide public transport with technology that is straightforward to implement and operate.211
The company’s cloud-based, subscription-delivered platform brings together account-based fare collection, mobile ticketing, contactless open-loop EMV payments and closed-loop smart cards. It also offers CAD/AVL integration, real-time passenger information, hardware and analytics. The system supports different fare media and models, allowing agencies to combine options such as contactless bank cards, phones, smart cards and paper tickets.28
Modeshift serves agencies in the United States and Europe. Its website reports more than 30 implementations, while a 2026 company announcement says it had expanded to almost 60 agencies across the two regions.25 A prominent project is the modernization of public transport in Skopje, North Macedonia: in 2024, Modeshift says it rolled out fare collection and passenger-information systems across 600 buses in three months, including mobile ticketing, real-time vehicle information and account-based fare management.12 Other case studies include deployments in U.S. communities and cities in Romania and Bulgaria, as well as the INNOAIR on-demand transport project in Sofia.37
