Based in Warsaw, the Motor Transport Institute (Instytut Transportu Samochodowego, or ITS) is a Polish research institute focused on road transport. It began operating in 1952, following a 1951 ministerial decree establishing the institute.311 Its director is Marcin Ślęzak.9
ITS’s work spans road safety, vehicle testing, environmental impacts, transport technology and the economics of road transport. Its research includes analysing crash data and road-user behaviour, testing vehicles and diagnostic equipment, measuring emissions, noise and vibration, and studying ways to reduce fuel use.11 The institute also works on digital transport systems, automation, vehicle monitoring and driver support, intelligent transport systems, MaaS and transport databases, including CEPIK.11
The institute undertakes projects in Poland and through international and European Union programmes. Its work has included projects on electromobility and hydrogen- and methane-related transport, as well as road-safety research concerning vulnerable road users, driver training and testing for alcohol or drug use.611 ITS also operates a Centre of Competence for Autonomous and Connected Vehicles and a Polish Road Safety Observatory.411
Its headquarters are at 80 Jagiellońska Street in Warsaw.[User-provided website metadata] The institute’s stated remit and projects place it primarily within Poland, with international and EU-linked activity.611
