The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) began in 1985 as an umbrella for transport, peace and development initiatives. Its early work included Bikes Not Bombs, which sent bicycles to support health and education efforts in Nicaragua. Founder Michael Replogle later served alongside other leaders in the organisation; Heather Thompson is identified as its current chief executive. 394
Headquartered in New York City, ITDP works across five continents and is active in more than 60 cities. Its regional offices and teams operate in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and the United States, combining local work with international exchange of transport practices. 245
The organisation’s work spans public transport, walking and cycling, travel demand management, parking, transport policy and urban development. It provides technical expertise, supports policy and project implementation, and publishes research and tools. Its stated aim is to advance sustainable and equitable transport while reducing emissions and pollution and improving social inclusion and access to economic opportunity. 412
Among its notable initiatives are the BRT Standard and BRT Resource Hub, which support the planning and assessment of bus rapid transit, and the Atlas of Sustainable City Transport, a data dashboard covering more than 1,000 metropolitan areas and over 40,000 jurisdictions and districts. ITDP’s India Cycle Rickshaw Improvement Project also helped bring nearly half a million modern rickshaws into use in North India. 11
