The Center for Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE) is an institute-wide research center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), focused on developing technology and design approaches for a resilient, socially sustainable built environment. Its work brings together architecture, science, engineering and industry to study how buildings and cities can better integrate material, energy and information systems with natural and human environments.412
Founded in 2007, CASE began as a collaboration between RPI and architecture and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The partnership linked academic research and teaching with professional practice, aiming to move new building systems and materials toward real-world use.39 CASE has operated in Brooklyn’s Industry City and on RPI’s main campus in Troy, New York; its work is rooted in the New York region, while its research addresses building and urban challenges more broadly.91011
The center’s projects range from building materials and façade systems to air quality, energy and urban resource use. Earlier work included the Active Modular Phytoremediation Wall System, a plant-based indoor air-cleaning system later integrated into New York City’s Public Safety Answering Center II, and a kinetic solar façade designed to provide daylight and power while reducing solar gain.3 Current research listed by CASE includes Community Virtual Power Plants, hemp-based construction materials and retrofit siding, and thermal design of hemp–lime composites.1 A “Seed to City” initiative, developed with RPI’s Manufacturing Innovation Center, focuses on building a New York regional economy for renewable materials and building-product manufacturing.7
CASE’s leadership has included architect and researcher Anna Dyson, its founding-era director, and Dennis Shelden, named director in 2020. RPI’s current catalog lists Shelden as director and Alexandros Tsamis as associate director.3912
