Based at NYU Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn, C2SMART is a university transportation research center focused on mobility challenges in cities. Its work examines how data and connected technologies can help address the movement of people and goods, while adapting solutions to cities with different infrastructure and needs.4
The center became operational in March 2017, and NYU professor Kaan Ozbay has served as its founding director since 2017.310 NYU leads a consortium that includes Rutgers University, the University of Washington, the University of Texas at El Paso, and the City College of New York.2 C2SMART’s research, education and technology-transfer work brings together university researchers and public-sector partners, including city and state transportation agencies.211
Its projects range from connected and autonomous mobility and shared transport to transportation data, safety and infrastructure resilience.2 In New York, examples include a collaboration with the city to monitor the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway for overweight vehicles, a Harlem digital twin developed with the FDNY to improve emergency response routing, and work on performance measures for the city’s off-hour delivery program.3 The center also uses real-world urban settings as research testbeds and trains students to work on practical transportation problems.24
