Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit working to build and steward a protected, landscaped route along the borough’s waterfront. Founded in 2004, it helped build public support for the project and for the city’s 2012 implementation plan. The planned route is 29 miles long, connecting waterfront neighborhoods, parks and open spaces from Greenpoint to East New York; BGI’s website reports 22 miles complete, with seven miles remaining.23
The organisation’s work combines advocacy with planning and coordination among community groups, businesses, nonprofits and government partners. Its focus includes advancing greenway segments and supporting their long-term stewardship. BGI also coordinates the NYC Greenways Coalition, a network of nearly 50 groups advocating for a connected citywide greenway system.611
One of its prominent projects is the Greenway Botanical Garden at the Naval Cemetery, listed among the organisation’s featured initiatives. The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway itself is BGI’s central undertaking: a route intended for pedestrians and cyclists that links waterfront communities and public spaces.13 BGI’s main listed address is at Newlab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.1
