Boston Indicators is the research center at the Boston Foundation, focused on Greater Boston. It analyzes measures of regional well-being and researches ideas intended to support a more prosperous, equitable and just region. Its work is designed to inform public discussion and practical efforts, and includes reports produced with community groups, civic leaders and Boston’s civic data community, as well as public convenings.23
The project began in 2000 through a partnership involving the City of Boston and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council; it was originally called the Boston Indicators Project.2 Its early work included an online framework tracking hundreds of measures across sectors. The organization now concentrates on research into demographic change and other issues affecting inclusion and equity in Boston and the wider region.4
Its portfolio spans housing, education, jobs and economic development, neighborhoods, arts and culture, and other topics. Recent work highlighted on its website examines permitting delays and housing production in Massachusetts, building-code reform for small multifamily homes, and barriers to accessory dwelling units. Other briefs address opioid deaths, immigrant-owned businesses on Main Streets, income and wages, zoning, and rental availability across Greater Boston.2 The organization’s regional analysis also places Boston-area trends in national and global context.2
Boston Indicators is based in Boston, Massachusetts. LinkedIn identifies Luc Schuster as Senior Director; the available sources do not establish whether he remains in that role today.36
