AIA New York is the New York City chapter of the American Institute of Architects, founded in 1857. Its history traces to a meeting of 13 architects in Richard Upjohn’s Manhattan office on February 23 of that year. The chapter describes itself as the AIA’s oldest and largest, with nearly 5,000 members, including licensed architects, allied professionals, students, and design enthusiasts. 211
Based at 536 LaGuardia Place in New York City, the chapter works on design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. Its stated mission is to support an architectural community through professional resources, critical exchange, and advocacy. Its work addresses issues including sustainability, planning, technology, and equity. 21112
A central part of its public-facing work is the Center for Architecture, which shares the chapter’s address. Inaugurated in 2003, the Center presents exhibitions and education and public programs for local and international audiences. Together, the organizations connect professional activity with public discussion of architecture and the built environment. 2312
The chapter’s activities also include committees, tours, competitions, grants, awards, continuing education, and licensing preparation. Its committees cover areas such as housing, education, interiors, transportation and infrastructure, and women in architecture. The Center for Architecture is a key institutional project; the chapter’s awards and exhibitions provide additional platforms for presenting architecture, design, and urban planning work. 23
