Fingrid is Finland’s national transmission system operator, responsible for the high-voltage grid that carries electricity across the country. Based in Helsinki, Finland, the company’s core task is to secure reliable electricity supply for households, businesses and public services, while adapting the power system to a faster-changing energy landscape.
The company operates at national scale, but its role reaches beyond Finland’s borders through cross-border electricity transmission and participation in the Nordic and European power market framework. Fingrid also provides market services and data infrastructure that support electricity retailers, distribution system operators and other actors in the sector.
One of its most visible digital services is Datahub, a centralised information exchange system for the Finnish retail electricity market. It stores data on around 4 million electricity points of use and is used by roughly 80 distribution system operators, 80 electricity suppliers and 60 service providers. Fingrid also publishes near real-time information on the state of Finland’s electricity system, including production, consumption and generation mix, updated every three minutes.
A major part of Fingrid’s work is connection management: it plans and implements main-grid connections with customers, including industrial sites and renewable energy projects. The company also handles balance services, reserves, guarantees of origin and grid code specifications. Among its public-facing tools, Fingrid’s “Sähköjärjestelmän tila” service gives an operational snapshot of the grid, while its open data and market information platforms are widely used by professionals in the sector.
Fingrid’s mission combines infrastructure, market operation and system development. In practice, that means maintaining the grid, enabling new connections and providing the data and rules needed for an electricity system that is becoming more decentralised and variable.
