ACA-M – Associação de Cidadãos Auto-Mobilizados is a Portuguese civic association focused on road safety, mobility, and the rights of people who move through public space as drivers, passengers, or pedestrians. Founded in 1999, the organisation says its purpose is to help end what it describes as the “civil war on Portuguese roads” by promoting a social pact that places safety and citizenship at the centre of transport policy.
Based in Portugal, ACA-M works mainly at national level, with a strong advocacy role in public debate on road crashes, victims’ rights, and safer streets. Its stated mission is not limited to traffic safety in the narrow sense: the association frames road use as a question of human and civic rights, arguing for the protection, mobilisation, and accountability of all road users.
One of its most visible activities is its involvement in the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. In 2025, ACA-M took part in commemorative events in Cebolais de Cima, in the municipality of Castelo Branco, and in the national ceremony in Évora. The organisation is also a member-founder of Liga de Associações Estrada Viva, a wider Portuguese network working on road safety remembrance and advocacy. The site refers to collaboration with GARE and other groups in organising these annual commemorations, which have been coordinated in Portugal since 2004.
ACA-M’s work sits at the intersection of activism, public awareness, and victim remembrance. Its public communications underline that road violence has lasting social and emotional consequences, and that policy responses should address both prevention and support.
