Document Type and Publisher
This is a web page from the World Bank Open Knowledge Repository, with the author listed as World Bank. Under the title "A Catalogue of Nature-based Solutions for Urban Resilience", it presents a set of related publications, each shown with its title, publication details, authors where named, and an excerpt or abstract. The subject is climate change, ecosystems, resilience and development.
Climate Change and Ecosystems
The excerpt from Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Adaptation: Nature-based Solutions from the World Bank Portfolio (2008) states that the mean surface temperature of earth has increased an average of 1 degree Celsius per century, with most of this change occurring in the past 30 to 40 years. The Convenient Solutions to an Inconvenient Truth volume (World Bank, 2010) argues for ecosystem-based approaches as an essential pillar of national climate strategies. It describes wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs and cloud forests as especially vulnerable, and lists the services these systems provide, including flood control, carbon sequestration and soil conservation.
Resilience in Nigeria
The book Toward Climate-Resilient Development in Nigeria (World Bank, 2013) by Raffaello Cervigni, Riccardo Valentini and Monia Santini analyzes climate risks to agriculture, livestock and water management. It reports that agriculture accounts for about 40 percent of Nigeria's GDP and employs 70 percent of its people, and that virtually all production is rain-fed. The book proposes 10 practical short-term priority actions. On energy, it notes that hydropower accounts for one-third of grid supply and that exploiting the entire 12 gigawatts of hydropower potential should be considered.
Nature-based Solutions in the Caribbean
The 2021 report Nature-Based Solutions for Improving Resilience in the Caribbean by Sara Valero, Juan Jose Miranda and Maja Murisic describes sustainable management of natural resources as essential for fisheries, forestry and tourism. It identifies climate change impacts, limited access to financing and narrow fiscal space as challenges, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It frames a green recovery based on the region's natural resources and biodiversity as an opportunity.
Land, Nature and Growth
The 2024 book Land Policies for Resilient and Equitable Growth in Africa by Klaus Deininger and Aparajita Goyal draws on data and examples from Africa to show that regulatory and institutional reforms can improve documented land rights. The 2025 report Reboot Development: The Economics of a Livable Planet by Richard Damania and colleagues reports that over 90 percent of the world is exposed to poor air quality, degraded land or water stress. It finds that efficient resource use, such as better nitrogen management and forest restoration, yields benefits that far exceed the costs.
Health and Pandemic Preparedness
Volume 2 of Disease Control Priorities, Fourth Edition (World Bank, 2025) uses modeling that suggests more than a 20 percent probability in the next decade of another pandemic with mortality comparable to COVID-19. It proposes a comprehensive pandemic financing framework. The compendium Unlocking the Power of Healthy Longevity (World Bank, 2024) states that about 41 million people die each year from noncommunicable diseases, about 74 percent of all deaths globally.
Purpose for Policymakers on Climate and Nature Resilience
The publications state their own aims. Rooted: Agriculture Rooted in Biodiversity (2025) aims to raise countries' understanding of biodiversity's importance for agriculture and to provide knowledge, policy tools and investment options. The Africa land book provides practical guidance to governments, their partners, policymakers, land professionals, scholars and civil society.
