Barcelona's Smart Mobility Grid Transforms Urban Transport
Barcelona's ambitious Smart Mobility Grid project integrates real-time data, autonomous shuttles, and citizen-centred design to reimagine urban transport — and it is already showing results.
A City on the Move
Barcelona has long been a pioneer in urban innovation. From its celebrated superblocks programme to its open-data initiatives, the Catalan capital consistently pushes the boundaries of what a smart city can be. Now, the Smart Mobility Grid (SMG) project is taking that ambition to the next level.
Launched in partnership with the Barcelona City Council and a consortium of European technology firms, the SMG integrates real-time traffic data, autonomous electric shuttles, and AI-powered route optimisation to create a seamless, multi-modal transport network.
How It Works
The system relies on a network of over 5,000 IoT sensors embedded in roads, bus stops, and cycle lanes. These sensors feed data into a central platform that optimises traffic flow in real time, reducing congestion and emissions simultaneously.
- Real-time traffic management across 12 districts
- Autonomous electric shuttle routes connecting underserved neighbourhoods
- Dynamic pricing for public transport based on demand patterns
- Citizen feedback loops via a dedicated mobile application
Early Results
After 18 months of operation, the results are striking:
- 23% reduction in average commute times in pilot districts
- 31% decrease in CO2 emissions from urban transport
- 89% citizen satisfaction rating for the autonomous shuttle service
"The Smart Mobility Grid proves that technology, when designed with citizens at the centre, can genuinely transform how people move through their city." — Marina Henriques
